Why We Do It

"We do what we have to do so we can do what we want to do."

I read this somewhere and it sure has been my mantra returning to work after the holidays. If you said it or if you read it and can recall where, let me know and I will be sure to credit properly. Have a great weekend all!

There are at least two ways to look at this quote.

For some people it's a life script. They go to work to earn money so that they can live their real life somewhere else, maybe at the lake on weekends, maybe on the golf course after early retirement.

For others this is an expression of vocation. I don't enjoy many of the things that go with my work of writing, speaking, coaching and consulting. But I do them willingly and religiously because they make it possible for me to do work that builds on my strengths.

Wonderful perspective. I wrote it thinking the first - I work now so I can play later - but now have to wonder if maybe there may be some truth for me in the latter. Thank you!
