Candidates are certainly judged by what they wear. Is that unfair? Absolutely. It's also verya human. And dressing "up" isn't always the answer either. In some business cultures if you're too dressed up you can be judged as not understanding the company. So do your homework.

I thought everyone knew this. We have a counselor who's filled in on long term stints for us. She's struggling to get a job and stopped in after an interview to talk about it. As she's talking to me, I asked, "was the interview today?" Yes. "As in just now?" Yes. "Is that what you wore?" Yes. Capri pants and a sweater. Are you kidding me? I told her she needed to buy a suit pronto and that she could count on NOT being called back for a second interview, which she wasn't. Great counselor, would hire her because I know her work, will never get a job because of no suit.
